The American Museum of Science and Energy is the best place to go to learn more about Oak Ridge’s past in a fun and interactive way. This museum attracts about 65,000 visitors per year and allows visitors to experience Oak Ridge’s evolution from farmlands and forests into a community with national science, energy, security, and environmental missions. There are a number of exciting hands-on demonstrations that make science and history come alive! The museum only costs $8 for adults and $5 for youth 6 to 17 years old, and children under 6 get in for free.
Jackson Square is rich in history. It is the original townsite of Oak Ridge and was named part of the Oak Ridge Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places. The site now features unique shopping, local restaurants, and events. Throughout Jackson Square, there are nostalgic photo displays that show wartime in Oak Ridge, during which it was open 24 hours a day as a gathering spot for off-duty workers. While the restaurants and shops cost money, it doesn’t cost a thing to walk around and take in the historic sights! When Oak Ridge was founded for the Manhattan Project, the arts became a primary area of interest for the individuals who were brought there. They banded together to create the Oak Ridge Community Art Center. The art displayed in the art center represents both international and regional artists. Admission to the museum is free, but donations are welcome.
