4 THINGS TO DO AT THE CHILDREN'S MUSEUM OF OAK RIDGE

To learn about the history of Oak Ridge in a hands-on and interactive way, pay a visit to the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge. The museum provides the opportunity for kids and those who are kids at heart to learn through playing. To help you plan your visit, we’ve put together a list of the top things to do at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge.

1. The Dollhouse

The Dollhouse is one of the most popular exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge. It’s a two-story house where children 5 feet tall or shorter can actually fit in comfortably. Inside, you’ll find furnishings that are scaled for kids. They can “cook” in the kitchen, read a book in the living room, or even put dolls to bed in the bedroom. Children love being able to play house at this exhibit!

2. Waterworks Exhibit

The Waterworks Exhibit at the Children’s Museum demonstrates the lock system on the Tennessee River and allows kids to find out what it’s like to run a tugboat on the river! Children and their families can explore navigation on the river, traveling by steamboat, tugboat, and barge. They’ll also learn how transportation of goods on the water is the most efficient and environmentally friendly option for transporting freight. It’s both educational and fun!

3. World of Trains

The World of Trains exhibit is another one of the most popular things to do at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge. It was inspired by models donated by Oak Ridge model railroader, Milton Lloyd, and built by members of the Knoxville Area Model Railroaders. This exhibit features a hands-on play room that has a mock-up of a diesel engine and a large HO scale layout. It also has the club rooms of KAMR, a full-size Norfolk Southern caboose, and a garden railroad that are open to visitors the third Sunday of each month.

4. The Bird Room

The Bird Room is full of bird songs that are common to the East Tennessee area. Children can try the interactive table to learn what bluebird nests and eggs look like compared to those from another species, as well as view the environments of birds in East Tennessee! For some special surprises, climb down the steps to the marsh area. This exhibit is popular because it’s fun for both children and adults!
